It is with nervous trepidation, but some excitement, that I am pleased to announce that my work on my translation of Suetonius’ The Twelve Caesars is complete!
Well, I say ‘complete’ … what I mean is that I’m ready to launch pre-orders and continue to edit it like a maniac until it’s ready to go to print, but, essentially, it’s done.
For this book, I have decided to launch it via Kickstarter. Why?
The primary reason for crowdfunding via Kickstarter is not only to bring readers a version of The Twelve Caesars worthy of Suetonius, but also to provide a physical copy that is a pleasure to own. Although the primary translation work is now complete, the aim is to produce a beautiful, case-bound, deluxe copy that is as beautiful to hold as it is enjoyable to read.
I am going to put everything we can into making this edition a beautiful addition to your bookshelf! The base book is designed with the highest quality in mind, featuring high-end offset printing, a sewn binding, and coloured page edges. Additionally, it has a deluxe dust jacket.
Please note that all the images you see here are currently a work in progress.
Below is a link to the Kickstarter pre-launch page. Follow it there, and when it goes live, which is provisionally scheduled for the end of this month, you will receive a notification.
This rather jazzy hardback version is, of course, somewhat pricey, but bear with me! The idea of this campaign is simply to fund these deluxe editions. Even if the campaign isn’t fully funded, the book will still be published in the usual manner, regardless, and will be available through the usual outlets at the usual prices.
Furthermore, once the campaign goes live, I will provide all subscribers with a unique link that will offer you a discount on the advertised price. I will email you all the link once it goes live.
There’s also an option to buy a digital copy from Kickstarter, priced at a perfectly reasonable $12. Again, the rules of Kickstarter stipulate that the campaign must be fully funded before it proceeds, but either way, the digital version will become available.
There are also ‘step goals,’ which mean that if we achieve steps beyond the initial campaign limit, more work will go into producing increasingly nicer versions of the finished book, including foil embossing and, hopefully, some pretty fancy custom artwork.
As always, I would love your suggestions and advice, and I really hope you like what I’ve put together, as it has been, quite literally, the work of some pretty late nights and early mornings. I’ve put 12-hour days, 7 days a week, for the past 6 months into this bad boy, and I hope you love it as much as I do.
Thanks all,
James.
Splendid! I will save up my pennies for the ebook version.
Great idea. What printer(s) are you using to make the book?
