Look at any map of the Roman world and half of it looks empty. There are grand cities and important roads and major forts - even minor forts - but what was in between them and where were all the people? It is commonly assumed that because these areas of the map looked empty, they must have been devoid of people, too. But is that true? And if not, who lived there and how many of them were there?
