In my hometown, Winnipeg, there is a very well known hotel named the Viscount Gort. I had always wondered who it was named after, but now I bet it was named after this guy.

It is apparently named after his brother, Standish Vereker, 7th Viscount Gort.

There were two branches of the Gort family, an Irish one and a British one. When John Vereker died in 1946, he had no son, so the Irish title went to Standish Vereker and the British title died out.

Standish Vereker emigrated to Canada in 1911 and became a major real-estate holder in Winnipeg.

John Vereker spent time in Winnipeg himself in 1908 where he accidentally shot a man dead on a moose hunt. Perhaps wisely, he went back to England.
